PARIS: Failing to win an Olympic medal for Vietnam, Trinh Thu Vinh through media, sends her apology to supporters on Saturday (Aug 3) from Paris.

Vinh made outstanding performance in the women's 25m pistol event's qualification round on Aug 2. She was expected to advance to the top three in the final after her promising fourth-place finish.

However, in her first time participating in an Olympics, Vinh cannot overcome high pressure and strong rivals.

She had a good start after first three series of five shots with 10 hits but could only score six hits in the next two series and was eliminated.

With 16 points Vinh places seventh among eight competitors.

The winner is Yang Jiin of South Korea with 37 hits. She is followed by Camille Jedrzejewski of the hosts and Veronika Major of Hungary.

"I want to apologise to all sport managers, coaches, supporters and people who have strongly supported me in recent time and at this tournament," Vinh said.

"I try my best today, staying focused and strictly following coach's tactics. My Rapid-fire competition is better than that yesterday. However, my rivals are strong so my effort is not enough to have good result to bring me a medal.

"I hope that I would continue receiving support to improve my level. I have learnt a lot from the Paris Olympics and will set targets for the next competitions. I will do better to meet expectations and love that fans have given to me," she said.

The 25m pistol is the second event that Vinh partook in the Games. Earlier, she finished fourth in the 10m air pistol on July 28.

Speaking about her former athlete, former national head coach Nguyen Thi Nhung says Vinh's performs better in the final round. Finishing at the seventh place is a regrettable result.

However, her two finals in the first Olympic are promising for the future. She should be proud being Olympic top eight.

In addition to Vinh, Vietnam also have swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang competing in the men's 1,500m freestyle event.

Hoang was expected to have good result after his poor performance in the 800m freestyle days ago as the 1,500m is his strong points. He won gold at the Youth Olympics and silver at the Asian Games in 2018.

However, the 24-year-old performance was not successful.

He finished No 21 in a time of 15min 4.06sec which is the worst in his major competitions since 2018.

On Sunday (Aug 4), cyclist Nguyen Thi That will compete in the women's road race event. The 2023 Asian champion is one of national medal hopes in Paris.

She is one of three last Vietnamese competitors at this global sport arena. Two others are weightlifter Trinh Van Vinh who will compete in the men's 61kg category on August 7 and canoeist Nguyen Thi Huong in the women's C1 200m event on August 8. – Vietnam News/ANN
