Landslides kill 12 in Nepal

KATHMANDU: Twelve people were killed and six others injured on Tuesday (Aug 6) in landslides triggered by incessant rains in Nepal, bringing the death toll to 165 since the monsoon season started in early June in the Himalayan country.

Eight people from two families died after their houses were swept away by landslides in Badigad Rural Municipality of Baglung district, and four others rescued sustained serious injuries.

"Six of the eight deceased are children," Chitrangat Baral, assistant chief district officer, told Xinhua.

In Musikot Municipality of Gulmi district, four were killed and two others wounded after two houses were buried in a landslide, said Ram Kumar KC, spokesperson for the district police.

A total of 165 people had been killed by Tuesday afternoon in rain-related disasters since the monsoon season began in early June, Nepal Police spokesperson Dan Bahadur Karki told Xinhua.

The Meteorological Forecasting Division has issued a high alert in 34 districts of the country about heavy rains on Tuesday and Wednesday. - Xinhua
