VIENTIANE: Oudomxay province recently convened a meeting to evaluate the progress of two major solar energy development projects, which are expected to span a total area of more than 3,000 hectares.
Talks centred on the inspection and collection of data concerning the forested land designated for these projects.
The meeting took place late last week, chaired by the Governor of Oudomxay province, Bounkhong Larjiamphone, with key stakeholders including provincial departments and project developers in attendance.
A report on initial studies and inspections identified a potential development area of 3,637.54 hectares.
However, after detailed surveys and impact assessments, the actual target for development has been narrowed down to 2,132.78 hectares, according to KPL News.
This area spans seven villages in Xay and Namor districts. It includes a mix of agricultural land, village reserve forests, protected forests, and other types of forested and farmed land.
In a related project, another solar energy initiative in Namor district is set to cover 1,483.12 hectares.
This project area includes 980.21 hectares of agricultural land, 502.91 hectares of untouched forest land, and 159.08 hectares of forested land currently used by local residents for crop cultivation, alongside 343.76 hectares of other farmland.
The meeting highlighted the importance of accurate land classification, with authorities noting that the use of a village level micro-land allocation plan has ensured that the project’s land management aligns closely with local communities’ actual land use.
The ongoing clean energy project in northern Laos plays a crucial role in advancing Laos’ energy development strategy, promoting socio-economic growth, and enhancing environmental conservation, the Minister of Energy and Mines said at the project opening ceremony last year.
“These projects will enhance energy infrastructure, making it more environmentally friendly, stable, and efficient, while also contributing to the betterment of local communities,” the minister said. - Vientiane Times/ANN
