Laos, Russia extend military cooperation

VIENTIANE: The Lao and Russian governments have indicated their shared desire to pursue cooperation in military ties by signing an updated bilateral agreement.

The agreement was signed on Aug 14 during the Army 2024 Military Technical Forum in Russia by Laos’ Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence, General Chansamone Chanyalath, and Russia’s Minister of Defence, Andrei Belousov.

During the event, the two ministers shared views on issues of international importance, as well as regional security.

General Chansamone thanked the Russian government and Ministry of Defence for providing valuable assistance to Laos and the Lao People’s Army in past years.

This assistance has included the development of command staff and military technical expertise, support for the clearance of unexploded ordnance, and other forms of support.

Russia has made an important contribution to the safeguarding and development of Laos and been a key player in the modernisation of the Lao People’s Army. – Vientiane Times/ANN
