Man injured in reported 'whale and boat collision' in Australia

SYDNEY: A man was seriously injured when a whale hit his small boat in the waters off Australia's east coast, local media reported on Sunday (Aug 18).

Australian news agency AAP reported that Jetski riders off the coast of Coolangatta, in southern Queensland near the border with New South Wales, called emergency services shortly before 9am on Sunday (2300 GMT Saturday) after a whale reportedly hit the man while he was onboard the boat.

The agency cited Queensland Police as saying that the man, in his 40s, hadn't spotted the whale until it appeared in front of him and was knocked out when the whale's tail hit him.

AAP reported the man was taken to hospital where he was receiving treatment for facial and spinal injuries.

Queensland Ambulance said that the man was in stable condition following the "reported whale and boat collision." – DPA
