Sci-fi thriller ‘Alien: Romulus’ leads China's box office chart

BEIJING: 20th Century Studios' sci-fi thriller "Alien: Romulus" topped the Chinese mainland's daily box office on Sunday (Aug 18), according to the China Movie Data Information Network.

The seventh instalment of the successful "Alien" franchise, the movie grossed approximately 79.98 million yuan (about US$11.2 million) on its third day of screening.

It tells the story of a group of young space colonists who encounter the universe's most terrifying life form while scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station.

Coming in second was domestic crime film "Go for Broke," which raked in approximately 35.7 million yuan on Sunday.

The Japanese animation "Detective Conan: The Million-Dollar Pentagram" came in third with 31.47 million yuan in revenue on the day.

The total box office revenue on the Chinese mainland on Sunday hit 219.09 million yuan. – Xinhua/ANN
