Probation for youth who filmed male toddler and child’s father in public toilet

SINGAPORE: He was just 17 years old in May 2021 when he started using his mobile phone to record images of male victims in public toilets.

By December that year, he had captured 97 images of 28 unidentified victims before he was caught red-handed by one of the victims and arrested.

The offender, now 20, was sentenced to 18 months’ probation on Aug 22 after he pleaded guilty to two voyeurism charges.

According to the prosecution, he did not target specific victims, and had “recorded the images to experience the thrill of doing so”.

He cannot be named as he was below 18 years old when he started his crime spree.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Huo Jiongrui told the court the youth had gone to several public toilets from May to December 2021 and recorded images of the 28 male victims.

The DPP added: “In every incident, the accused would go into the toilet cubicle next to his victim’s, surreptitiously hold his mobile phone at the top of the cubicle wall separating him and his victim, and use the mobile phone’s camera to record images of the victim using the toilet.”

The youth did the same thing when a 39-year-old man and his three-year-old son entered a toilet cubicle at Parkway Parade shopping centre in Marine Parade at around 7.15pm on Dec 11, 2021.

The offender, who was inside an adjacent cubicle, recorded four images of the father and son.

The father saw the device and alerted a passing security officer.

As part of the offender’s sentence, he must stay indoors from 11pm to 6am every day, and perform 60 hours of community service.

His maternal uncle and aunt-in-law were also bonded for S$5,000 to ensure his good behaviour. - The Straits Times/ANN
