Laos seeks to improve lives of people with disabilities

VIENTIANE: Laos continues to strengthen its commitment to improving the lives of its disabled citizens with an agreement on driving licences and the driving test specifically designed for people with disabilities.

The Lao government recognises the right of persons with disabilities to income security and the responsibility of the state to provide adequate living conditions, Lao national TV reported on Friday (Aug 23).

Laos has appointed the national commission for disabled people, which established a cross-ministerial body to act as the national focal point on matters of the disabled and to advise on national policy, programs, and services for people with disabilities.

Various ministries and organisations are represented in a coordinating committee to promote the right of people with disabilities and ensure they are upheld, said the report.

Ongoing efforts in this regard support persons with disabilities, addressing the rehabilitation needs of the growing number of people who experience mobility difficulties due to disease, unexploded ordnance incidents, or other accidents. - Xinhua
