Cambodian social media influencer faces two years in jail and huge fine for firing boyfriend’s military weapon


PHNOM PENH (Khmer Times): A Cambodian woman and a wannabe influencer, who posted images and footage of her wantonly firing her boyfriend’s pistol – who is a serving member of the armed forces – on social media, has been told that she faces a six months to two years sentence and a fine of 500,000 to 2 million Cambodian riels.

The Investigating Judge of the Phnom Penh Municipal Court on the evening of August 23, 2024, decided to detain the woman after prosecutors formally charged the suspect with possession and use of a weapon without permission under Article 20 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

The rule states that – borrowing, transferring, distributing, renting, processing, repairing, repairing weapons, explosives and ammunition of all kinds without permission shall be punished by imprisonment from 6 months to 2 years and a fine of 500,000 to 2 million riels.

On the night of August 20, 2024, Meng Lihor – aka Yubee Ly – posted images of her discharging the military gun into the air in Sangkat Boeung Keng Kang 3, Khan Boeung Keng Kang, Phnom Penh.

Upon seeing the footage, police of the Office of Minor Crimes of the Criminal Department of the Ministry of Interior brought her to the Criminal Department for questioning in connection with the video of the shooting.

The woman stated that that the pistol belonged to her boyfriend, who worked in the armed forces.

But she stated that the video was shot in 2022, but was reposted on a ‘fake account’

The accused is currently being investigated by the Investigating Judge of the Phnom Penh Municipal Court, and will be held in pretrial detention. - Khmer Times
