YANGON: Under the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Special Fund, Myanmar has worked with 118 projects from 2017 to 2024 with a budget of US$35.2 million, an official from the LMC National Coordination Unit (Myanmar) told Xinhua on Tuesday (Aug 20).

Among these projects, over 65 were successfully completed, and the rests are in the process of implementation, the official said.

These projects cover a wide range of areas, including agriculture, livestock research, rural development, poverty reduction, education, health, trading, science and technology, among others, directly benefiting many local communities, she added.

The country got 10 projects in 2017, 19 projects in 2018, 22 projects in 2020, 21 projects in 2021, 20 projects in 2022, 14 projects in 2023, and 12 projects in 2024.

As an agriculture-based country, Myanmar has seen significant improvements in the agricultural sector, in particular crop production, of coffee, macadamia, bamboo, nuts, and others, thanks to the technology and equipment provided with the LMC projects, she said.

These advancements have helped boost the socio-economic development of rural areas in the Southeast Asian country, according to her.

The LMC projects in Myanmar also focus on agricultural research and the development of micro, small and medium-sized businesses, the official said.

China initiated the LMC Special Fund in 2016 to support the small and medium-sized cooperation projects put forward by the six Lancang-Mekong countries, namely China, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand. - Xinhua
