Alert up over strong typhoon


The nation’s weather agency said that severe tropical storm Shanshan is forecast to approach western and eastern Japan from tomorrow through Wednesday, warning of lightning, gusts, hail and torrential rain over the weekend.

As of 9am local time on Saturday, the typhoon was located around the Ogasawara Islands, south of Tokyo, moving northward at a speed of 25kph, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

Typhoon Shanshan is likely to strengthen in force due to high sea temperatures tomorrow and approach western and eastern Japan, the JMA said.

Weather officials warned of lightning, gusts, hail and torrential rain over the weekend ahead of Shanshan’s arrival, mainly on the Pacific side of western and eastern Japan. — Xinhua
