Cambodia invites Australia to join Mine-Free World Summit

PHNOM PENH (Phnom Penh Post/ANN): Cambodia has extended an invitation to Australia to participate in the upcoming Siem Reap-Angkor Summit on a Mine-Free World, scheduled for November this year.

The invitation was conveyed by Acting Head of State Hun Sen during a meeting with the newly appointed Australian Ambassador to Cambodia, Derek Yip.

Hun Sen commended Australia’s ongoing support for Cambodia’s mine clearance efforts and urged the Australian government to continue providing assistance because their support is crucial in helping Cambodia achieve its goal of a mine-free country and share its demining expertise with other nations.

Cambodia became a signatory to the Ottawa Treaty in 2000 and has since established itself as a leading model for the elimination of anti-personnel mines.

The Kingdom was elected by 164 state parties to chair and host the 5th Review Conference of the Convention, known as the Siem Reap-Angkor Summit. - Phnom Penh Post/ANN
