Myanmar revises passport fees, electricity rates effective Sept 1

YANGON: The Ministry of Electric Power (MOEP) announced on Friday (Aug 30) that electricity bills will be increased, from the previous maximum of 125 kyats to 300 kyats for household use and from the previous maximum of 180 kyats to 500 kyats for commercial use starting September 1.

The current exchange rate is 1,000 kyats to 0.48 dollars.

According to the agreement of the Union Cabinet Meeting No.5/2024 held on July 5, 2024, the electricity rates will be 50 kyats for household use from 1 to 50 units, 100 kyats from 51 to 100 units, 150 kyats from 101 to 200 units, and 300 kyats from 201 units and above.

The electricity rates will be fixed at 250 kyats for non-household use such as industries, businesses, one-off, temporary use, street lights, government offices, state-owned industries, state-owned businesses, river water supply, municipal offices and enterprises, non-governmental organisations, foreign embassies, and international organisations from 1 to 5,000 units, 400 kyats from 5,001 to 20,000 units, and 500 kyats from 20,001 units and above.

Therefore, the electricity rate adjustment issue has been submitted to the Union Government by Section 41 of the Electricity Law of 2014 and the revised electricity rates will be effective from September 1.

According to the increased rate on July 1, 2019, the electricity rates for household use were 35 kyats from 1 to 30 units, 50 kyats from 31 to 50 units, 70 kyats from 51 to 75 units, 90 kyats from 76 to 100 units, 110 kyats from 101 to 150 units, 120 kyats from 151 to 200 units, and 125 kyats from 201 units and above.

The electricity rates for commercial use were 125 kyats from 1 to 500 units, 135 kyats from 501 to 5,000 units, 145 kyats from 5001 to 10,000 units, 155 kyats from 10,001 to 20,000 units, 165 kyats from 20,001 to 50,000 units, 175 kyats from 50,001 to 100,000 units and 180 kyats from 100,000 units and above.

Since the supply of electricity is essential for the development of the nation's social life and economic development, the ministry has upgraded, built and maintained large power plants and power lines and it has been informed that there is a need to prepare and set electricity rates as the cost of production increases according to the financial year to produce and distribute more stable electricity to the people who use electricity through foreign investments.

Authorities revise passport book value effective Sept 1

The passport book value has been changed from 35,000 kyats to 40,000 kyats starting September 1, according to the August 29 release of the Myanmar Passport Issuance Office.

In the statement, it is mentioned that the book fees will be changed from 35,000 kyats to 40,000 kyats starting from September 1 regarding the application for ordinary Myanmar passports.

The Myanmar Passport Issuing Board is issuing passports at the Myanmar Passport Issuing Office (Yangon) from February 2, 2023, and Nay Pyi Taw, Mandalay, Pathein and Bago from February 26, 2024, using the online appointment system to verify according to the process.

It has been using an online appointment system in Myitkyina, Monywa, Lashio, Taunggyi, Kengtong, Sittwe, Hakha, Hpa-an, Mawlamyine, Dawei and Magway since May 2.

To do so, the applicants will have to pay 35,000 kyats of passport book value with KBZPay/MPU Card and can make an online booking from 9am to obtain an appointment date.

Online bookings can be made on the Myanmar Passport Issuance Board's website www.passport.gov.mm and those who have received online bookings must bring their UID numbers verified by the Department of Immigration when applying for passports.

According to the release of the Myanmar Passport Issuing Office, those who have obtained an online appointment to apply for a passport at the Myitkyina and Lashio branches can do so at the passport issuing offices in Yangon, Mandalay and Taunggyi.

In addition, the online booking can be applied for at the passport issuing office in Nay Pyi Taw using the Yangon Region household list, and Kayah State household list applicants can choose to apply at the Taunggyi branch with the approval of the state government or the regional military command. - The Nation/ANN
