THAI NGUYEN, (Vietnam): One student has died after fourteen students of the Thai Nguyen Industrial College living in the same dormitory were hospitalised with an unidentified fever.

The Thai Nguyen Centre for Disease Control (CDC) said that during the four-day National Day holiday, from last Saturday (Aug 31) to Tuesday (Sept 3), three students from the college were sick and had to be transferred to the Thai Nguyen Central Hospital for treatment.

The CDC worked with the Thai Nguyen City Medical Centre to investigate.

Initial reports show that the most serious case was VMC, 16, from Sung Tra Commune, Meo Vac District, the northern mountainous province of Ha Giang.

VMC is a student of Intermediate Electricity class K57, living in room 209 K2 of the college’s dormitory.

Last Thursday evening, VMC had abdominal pain and vomited.

VMC was transferred to Thai Nguyen Central Hospital for examination and treatment.

One day later, VMC was in a coma and was diagnosed with meningitis, cholecystitis and gallbladder polyps.

On the same day, in the afternoon, the patient's condition worsened, showing signs of acute myocarditis.

The patient was prescribed endotracheal intubation, blood filtration, endotracheal intubation, mechanical ventilation and was diagnosed with multiple organ failure, acute heart failure and hepatitis B and had a very poor prognosis.

On Saturday, VMC's family asked the hospital to let the student go home, where VMC later died.

The second patient is HMN, 15, also from Meo Vac District.

HMN is studying at the Intermediate Electricity B class K58, living in room 206 K3 of the dormitory.

On Sunday evening, NHMN had headache, stomach ache, a fever of 40 degrees Celsius and fatigue.

The college medical staff examined and transferred HMN to the Thai Nguyen Central Hospital for health monitoring with symptoms of high fever, headache, chest pain and stomachache of unidentified cause.

HMN then was transferred to the National Children's Hospital for treatment.

The patient is being treated at the emergency ward and is in a coma, on a ventilator.

In addition to these cases, the Thai Nguyen Central Hospital also recorded 11 other patients with fevers who are college students living in the same dormitory. They are all under special supervision.

After many students were hospitalised during the holiday, the Thai Nguyen City Medical Centre and the college disinfected the entire K1, K2, K3 dormitories and the school's cafeteria.

All students in three dormitory rooms with the ill youngsters were quarantined and asked to self monitor their health and notify the college if they have any unusual symptoms. - Vietnam News/ANN
