Myanmar to celebrate International Literacy Day in Naypyidaw


YANGON: Myanmar will hold a celebration of the upcoming International Literacy Day at its Ministry of Education in capital Naypyidaw, the state-run media Myanmar Radio and Television (MRTV) reported on Thursday (Sept 5).

The celebration aims to help encourage the illiterate people in the South-East Asian country to gain the ability to read and write, according to the report.

International Literacy Day is marked on Sept 8 each year since 1967 around the world, and this year it will be globally celebrated under the theme of "Promoting multilingual education: Literacy for mutual understanding and peace".

Despite progress made in past years, to Myanmar illiteracy rate remains a challenge and the government has conducted literacy campaigns countrywide, including out-of-school education programs for children and older individuals seeking education, said the MRTV report. Enditem
