YANGON: More than 100 people suffered from food poisoning after eating biryani at Chaungcha Village in Tatkon Township, Naypyidaw, according to local residents and some social organisations.
On Tuesday (Sept 17), at around 10am, biryani, chicken and potato curry, and duck egg and eggplant curry were served to villagers as part of a donation in Chaungcha Village, Kyatthugin Village-tract in Tatkon Township, Naypyidaw Union Territory.
By the evening, symptoms of food poisoning, such as diarrhoea and vomiting, began to appear among those who ate the food.
“Many people who ate the food were affected. However, there is no longer any cause for concern,” said a local resident from Tatkon.
Those affected by food poisoning included 56 inpatients and 50 outpatients at the 100-bed hospital in Tatkon, five inpatients at the Naypyidaw Children's Hospital, and four inpatients at the 300-bed Naypyidaw General Hospital.
The Ministry of Health reported that the condition of all patients is improving.
In the evening, emergency response teams of health officials and workers were dispatched to the village.
Additionally, on Wednesday (Sept 18), an emergency response team from the Naypyidaw Public Health Department, led by a Deputy Director of Infectious Diseases, and a medical team from the 300-bed Nay Pyi Taw General Hospital also joined the efforts to control the outbreak.
The Ministry of Health emphasised that when offering food donations to those affected by natural disasters, donors should ensure that the food is freshly prepared and hygienic.
It also urged donors to deliver food through township supervisory committees and management groups to ensure proper hygiene standards.
Health officials working in temporary relief camps were also advised to monitor the cleanliness and safety of the food being donated. - Eleven Media/ANN
