Thai K-Pop pricess Lisa continues to shine bright; Blackpink member wins again at 2024 MTV Video Music Awards

BANGKOK: Thailand’s very own K-pop princess Lalisa “Lisa” Manoban has made history by winning her second “Best K-pop” title at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards on Thursday.

Lisa, who clinched her first MTV VMA in 2022, said her latest single “Rockstar” released on June 28, marks her comeback as a solo artist since her first single “Lalisa” hit the charts on September 10, 2021.

While she had already broken new ground when winning Best K-Pop in 2022 to become the first female and first soloist to do so, Lisa made history once again by becoming the second artist ever to win the Best K-Pop category more than once. The 27-year-old remains the only female and solo artist to do so.

Upon accepting the award, she thanked US record label RCA Records and her own production firm LLOUD for their support.

Lisa was nominated in four categories this year – Best K-pop, Best Editing, Best Art Direction and Best Choreography.

She also stunned the crowds at the awards, held in New York’s UBS Arena, with a high-energy, showstopping performance. Also performing were Sabrina Carpenter, Katy Perry, Megan Thee Stallion, Le Sserafim, Shawn Mendes, Karol G and Eminem.

At the MTV event, Lisa first took to the stage for a fiery performance of her latest solo hits, “New Woman” and “Rockstar.”

Decked out in a bold red-leather outfit, the Thai superstar wowed the crowd (including apparent fan TikTok star Addison Rae, who sang along to “Rockstar,” according to audience camera footage) to deliver her first new songs since launching her LLOUD record label and signing with RCA Records.

In her signature shy but smiley self, Lisa gave thanks for the award in English and even added some Thai into her speech after receiving the award.

"Rockstar was a meaningful comeback for me after ‘Lalisa’ so this is very, very special to me,” she told the cheering arena. “Thank you to RCA family and Team LLOUD and BLINKs and Lilies all around the world,” referring to BLACKPINK fans as well as the nickname to the fans of Lisa herself.

Lisa’s 2024 victory further solidifies her as a global force, pushing boundaries in both K-pop and pop music at large.

On Friday evening (Sept 20) - Lisa's official website (www.lalisaofficial.com) suggested a new single on the way soon by displaying "pre-save" and "pre-add" options.

At the same time, the Blackpink member shared a new video on YouTube and TikTok, seemingly enjoying the mood of a romantic summer getaway. The video also featured the melody line, "So kiss me," hinting at the theme of Lisa's new track.
