ISLAMABAD: (Bernama) Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has invited Bangladesh leader Muhammad Yunus for an official visit to Islamabad in a sign of warming relations between the two countries.
Shehbaz said he held "a most cordial meeting" with the Bangladesh interim government's Chief Adviser, a post equivalent to prime minister, on the sidelines of the annual UN General Assembly meeting in New York on Wednesday (Sept 25).
"While recalling their many commonalities and historic relations, both sides reiterated their common desire to enhance economic and commercial cooperation while ensuring commitment to work towards peace and development in South Asia," the Pakistan prime minister said, adding that the discussion focused on enhancing people-to-people contacts.
"I also extended a warm invitation to the distinguished Bangladesh leader to undertake an official visit to Pakistan at his earliest convenience," he said.
Bangladesh's Foreign Advisor Touhid Hossain was present during the meeting.
Shehbaz expressed Pakistan's interest in investing in Bangladesh's textile and leather sectors, according to Bangladesh's state media.
The two leaders discussed renewing foreign secretary-level talks and reviving the joint commission, Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha reported.
Yunus also called for reviving the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) for promoting relations among its eight members. - Bernama
