S.E. Asia gets set for a biggie - Malaysian legendary hip-hop group KRU are back to strut their stuff with new album Kaset


MALAYSIA'S super sibling - Norman, Yusry and Edry Abdul Halim - of legendary hip hop group KRU are back to entertain. And this they aim to make it their best ever.

This is a fact - ever since the three brothers burst into the local music scene with their debut album 'Canggih' in 1992, the band's music mix of pop, hip-hop and rap have never failed to enthrall fans in Malaysia.

Considered by many as Malaysia's first boy band in the country, the group has had many following all over the South-East Asia region especially in Indonesia, Thailand, Brunei and the Philippines. In fact, they were among the first band in the country to have toured in all these countries. They even can count in having fans all over the world including Vietnam.

In their three decades in music, the trio have churned many hits that are still fresh in the mind of many local music lovers. Among their famous songs include 'Fanatik', 'Awas' and 'Ooh! La! La!'.

Hits like 'Fanatik' and 'Awas' are considered to be iconic songs of the 1990s in Malaysia. In fact, some of their hits are still getting big hits in YouTube.

The music of the brothers left a lasting mark on the local music scene, with their rise to stardom symbolising a modern shift in Malaysian pop culture.

So popular they were, their live performances attracted thousands of spectators. In fact, KRU’s ten-year anniversary concert at Stadium Merdeka in 2002 saw more than 20,000 people attending the event.

Despite all their success, their busy life and individual commitments caught up with the brothers and in 2018 had announced that the group are taking a break and will not perform together after their 25th anniversary concert in Istana Budaya.

But the love of music and family ties have brought the brothers back to the music scene and on Thursday (Oct 10) they announced during a press conference in Kuala Lumpur that they are coming back with a new album - Kru's 'Kaset' - and this time under the label of music giant Sony.

In fact, it was Sony Music Entertainment's (SME) Kenny Ong, the Managing Director for Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore and Special Projects South-East Asia, who made the move to bring the famous trio back to the music scene.

"We wanted an iconic band to lead the way again in the music scene. Personally, I am a big fan of KRU myself. And it was an idea that took several months to succeed," said Kenny.

"We met the KRU brothers in April and we managed to convince all parties involved that this project that it will be a big success. I'm delighted the brothers and Sony think alike and they have agreed to get together for another round of enthralling music for all fans in Malaysia and also the whole region."

Norman, the oldest of the KRU siblings, said he still misses the good old days of performing after the group disbanded in 2018.

"At the end of the we are brothers and KRU is synonymous with us. In, 2018, after 25 years of making music as a group, we felt it was a right time to take a break.

"Also at that time, we also had so many individual projects that we were involved with. But it has been six years. The three of us felt it is the right time for us to sit down and make some solid and good music together," said Norman.

His second brother Yusry agreed and said that they promise their fans that this will be their best album yet. The specialty of the album will also showcase the three brothers working together and composing all the songs in the album.

"This will be better than the rest. We aim to prove just that in our new album. We really have some solid numbers lined up for the new album," said Yusry.

The youngest of the brothers, Edry, added that this will be an exciting project that the three brothers are very determined to give their best attempt ever in coming out with an album.

"This is a special. After 32 years in the business we hope to put all our experiences and our music knowledge into this album. It will be one not to be forgotten," said Edry.

For the record, the three brothers besides being accomplished musicians, are also very successful in other fields as well. The brothers are also part of KRU Studios, very much a leading trailblazer in the Malaysian music scene.

Besides being a very successful businessman, Norman and his brothers have also helped many young musicians in achieving success in the Malaysian music scene.

Yusry is among the most well-known artiste in Malaysia. Besides achieving fame with KRU, he is also an excellent composer, producer, director and an actor. Besides directing and acting in the smash hit 'Cicak Man' trilogy, the three brothers also had acted in the movie 'Awas'. He also won much admiration in the movies 'Mr Cinderella' and 'Cinta Kolestrol.'

The youngest sibling Edry has had much success like his older brothers. An accomplished song writer and producer, Edry is also part of the four-man 'Mojo' group, which also has had many successes in the music scene.

After proving they are among the best musicians in the local music industry and bringing in so many achievements in related fields, the brothers now aim to up their tempo in their new venture.

At the same time, the brothers are now going back to their roots as KRU. And once again fans wait with much eagerness to see the outcome.

And you can bet it will one unforgettable venture that will thrill the Malaysian music fans.
