Brunei Immigration officer who accepted carpet bribes convicted of corruption

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Seruji Setia, 52, was convicted of five instances of corruption for receiving over two thousand dollars worth of carpets, among other items, at the Magistrate’s Court on Saturday (Oct 12).

During the trial, which included testimony from 21 witnesses, the senior chief immigration officer was revealed to have accepted BND100 from a manager of an employment agency in September 2022, which was linked to his official capacity as Head of the Work Pass Section at the immigration department.

Between 2021 and 2022, he also obtained several valuable items without payment from a company, including three rolls of carpets worth BND1,420, five rolls of carpets valued at BND1,344, sofa cushion covers estimated at BND650, and car seat cushion covers.

Senior Magistrate Azrimah Abdul Rahman has set October 19 for the Deputy Public Prosecutor Rozaimah Abdul Rahman and defence counsel Ahmad Basuni Abbas to present their submissions regarding mitigation and sentencing. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
