PHNOM PENH: Cambodia continues to cherish its historical bonds with Malaysia, promising its diplomatic support as Malaysia assumes the Asean Chairmanship, to advance regional strategies that promote lasting peace and stability.
Cambodian Minister of Commerce Cham Nimul (pic) conveyed a strong message to the global community at the Malaysia 67th National Day reception, where she was the guest of honour.
"The Royal Government of Cambodia exerts full support and works closely with Malaysia to intensify our efforts to realise the key priorities of building the Asean Community and finalising the (Asean Community) Vision 2045.
"Cambodia is also committed to working with Malaysia on regional and international issues on common interests to promote regional and global peace, security, and stability,” she told a galaxy of international guests, including top Asian and Western diplomats, present at the event on Wednesday (Oct 16).
Malaysian Ambassador to Cambodia Shaharuddin Onn hosted the reception.
The high-profile minister narrated how Malaysia-Cambodia relations blossomed over the decades into a powerful diplomatic friendship that stood the test of time. Both nations’ diplomatic links strengthened since the formation of the Non-Aligned Movement in Bandung, Indonesia in 1955 and Malaysia played a pivotal role in supporting Cambodia to become an Asean member in 1999.
"The national day marks not just the independence of Malaysia but also the spirit of unity and resilience that has propelled this beautiful nation forward that is rich in culture, heritage, and diversity.
"Malaysia represents a model of economic development, inclusivity, and social harmony. The bond between the two countries has been growing remarkably over the years, rooted in shared history and commitment to peace and prosperity,” said Nimul.
She said Cambodia will continue to push for a more vibrant and harmonious Asean and a regional architecture that is rule-based, open and inclusive.
"I congratulate Malaysia for assuming the Asean chairmanship in 2025 as Malaysia aspires to expedite the Asean community-building process under the theme of inclusivity and sustainability,” said Nimul. - Bernama
