Jobless man gets 16 months jail for stealing boats

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: The Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday (Oct 22) sentenced a 24-year-old unemployed man to 16 months’ imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to multiple theft charges.

Magistrate Normazdina Md Maskub presided over the case, while Deputy Public Prosecutor Abdul Musawwir Mahli detailed the incidents involving the defendant, Mohammad Aiman Harman, and three accomplices.

The court heard that between the evening of Sept 8 and the morning of Sept 9, the group stole a fibreglass boat, a 60-horsepower engine, and a boat trailer from a house in Kampong Kasat. The total value of the stolen items was BND7,540.

The defendant admitted to towing the boat and trailer away in a vehicle and subsequently selling the boat and engine for BND2,000 in Limbang. However, he received only BND50 from the sale, and only the boat trailer was recovered during the police investigation.

In a separate incident on Sept 14, the defendant and his accomplices stole another boat from the back of a filling station in Kampong Suran, Tutong.

CCTV footage captured the theft, and the defendant later confessed to his involvement. This boat, valued at BND350, was successfully recovered by the authorities. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
