HANOI: A total of 285,480 soldiers and militia members and 12,503 military vehicles have been mobilised in response to the approaching Typhoon Trami, according to the National Steering Committee for Civil Defence.

The air defence force has also mobilised 4,600 officers, 208 vehicles and eight aircraft, while 30 officers, two helicopters and four cars from Corps 18 (helicopter corps) are also joining the response efforts.

Border guards from the northeastern coastal province Quang Ninh to south-central province Binh Thuan are working with local authorities, people and ship owners to update more than 67,000 vessels and 307,000 people on the typhoon's trajectory and guide them to safety.

As of 4am on Friday, the eye of the storm was situated on the eastern waters of Vietnam's northern East Sea (known internationally as the South China Sea). It is projected to strengthen and continue westward at about 10km/h.

Over the next two days, the tropical storm could change its direction to the southeast and gradually weaken.

Due to Trami's impact, the eastern waters of the northern East Sea can expect strong winds of 62-88m/h, with areas near the storm's centre reaching 75-102km/h. Rough sea is forecast with waves that could reach 5-9m high.

Heavy rain is expected in the East Sea with a possibility of tornadoes and strong gusts of wind (50-74km/h). — Vietnam News/ANN
