Seven killed, others hurt in bridge collapse

SEVEN people were killed and several others injured after a seaside bridge collapsed in Indonesia’s eastern Maluku province, according to a senior official from the local disaster agency.

The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon in Central Maluku regency, as supporters of a regency head candidate were crossing the bridge to welcome the politician for a campaign rally, said Sandhy Luhulima, head of the emergency unit of the provincial disaster management and mitigation agency, yesterday.

“When they were on the bridge, it collapsed due to poor construction,” Luhulima said.

The injured were taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment, the official said. — Xinhua
