VIENTIANE: Laos and Cuba celebrated the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic relations at a ceremony held in Vientiane on Monday (Nov 4).
The event was attended by the Secretary General of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party Central Committee and President of Laos, Thongloun Sisoulith, Politburo member of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the National Assembly of People’s Power of Cuba, Esteban Lazo Hernández, Lao National Assembly President, Dr Xaysomphone Phomvihane, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Saleumxay Kommasith, Deputy Prime Ministers, Ministers and Deputy Ministers, the Mayor of Vientiane, Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to Laos, other Lao government officials, and a visiting government delegation from Cuba.
Dr Xaysomphone, representing Laos, and Esteban Lazo Hernandez, representing Cuba, recalled the history of cooperative relations between their two countries over the past 50 years.
This relationship is founded on friendship and unity and has been a longstanding tradition since the people of Laos carried out a national democratic revolution against the invasion of foreign imperialism for national independence in the 1960-70s, as well as in the current mission of protecting and developing the nation.
The Lao and Cuban delegations expressed sincere appreciation for the friendship and brotherly cooperation between their parties, parliaments, governments and peoples, which it is their intention to strengthen and make an important contribution to the mission of protecting and furthering development in a strong socialist direction.
Although the two countries are geographically far apart, they are closely connected in many ways and frequently hold meetings and organise regular reciprocal visits by high-ranking delegations from their two parties, national assemblies, states, ministries, and organisations including mass organisations.
The Lao delegation expressed appreciation for the continuing enhancement of cooperation between the parliaments of Laos and Cuba.
Both delegations confirmed their intention to continue cooperation in areas of potential and mutual interest, especially trade, public health, education, sports, and agriculture, and pledged to continue to support each other in regional and international arenas. - Vientiane Times/ANN
