Theft: Brunei man gets jail and whipping

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: In the Intermediate Court on Monday, Judge Radin Safiee Radin Mas Basiuni handed down a 32-month prison sentence and two whips to Mokshin Durahman, who pleaded guilty to housebreaking and theft.

Mokshin had unlawfully entered a storage room belonging to a company in Kampong Menglait, intending to commit theft.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Abdul Musawwir Mahli and Prosecutor Ahmad Firdaus Mohammad presented the case details, revealing that on Aug 4, at around 9pm, the company’s employee, Mosharaf, had locked the storage room containing various equipment, including a blower, a water jet, and a chainsaw.

The next morning, around 7.55am, Mosharaf was informed by a maintenance worker that the storage room door had been left open.

On inspecting it, he found that the door lock was damaged, and the items were missing. A police report was filed later that day.

Police investigations led to Mokshin’s arrest on Aug 6. Further inquiries revealed that in the early hours of Aug 5, Mokshin had driven a friend to Bangunan Menglait 1.

The friend, who was unaware of Mokshin’s intentions, remained in Mokshin’s vehicle while Mokshin went to the storage room, pried open the lock, and stole the equipment.

Mokshin later drove to a relative’s house in Kampong Burong Pinggai Ayer, where the friend unknowingly assisted him in unloading the stolen items, which were recovered by the police. The stolen items, valued at a total of BND1,630, were returned to the company.

The court also noted Mokshin’s previous convictions for theft-related offences in reaching its sentencing decision. – Borneo Bulletin/ANN
