Newborn announced as Cambodia hails rise in Irrawaddy dolphin numbers

PHNOM PENH: A newborn baby dolphin has been spotted in the Mekong River – and officials say its birth is part of a welcome rise in Irrawaddy dolphin numbers in Cambodia.

The bay dolphin was spotted by the research team of the Fisheries Administration and WWF on Friday (Nov 8) in Anlong Kampi, Chroy Banteay village, Sambok commune, Chit Borei district, Kratie province.

The baby dolphin is in good health and is with two large dolphins.

This is the ninth baby dolphin born in 2024, the highest birth rate since 2021.

In 2021, Cambodia had six newborn dolphins and nine dead dolphins.

In 2022, there were six newborn dolphins and 11 dead.

In 2023, there were eight dolphins born and five died, and in 2024, as of the beginning of November, there are new nine dolphins and only three died.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries would like to thank the river people, local authorities and the people for their care and protection of the fishery resources, which are the national treasures. - Khmer Times
