CIA officer held in Cambodia, charged in US for leaking sensitive military intelligence

PHNOM PENH (Bernama): A US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Officer arrested in Cambodia for leaking sensitive American intelligence regarding Israel’s military plans against Iran was charged in the US court, foreign media has reported.

CIA officer Asif W. Rahman, stationed overseas, was detained in Cambodia on Tuesday and subsequently taken to Guam, where he was charged with possessing and transmitting national defence information.

On Wednesday, media reports stated that Rahman was indicted by the Grand Jury in the US for violating the Espionage Act.

The New York Times first reported Rahman’s arrest in Cambodia on November 12.

The place of the arrest nor the covert American operation to bundle the officer out remains unknown.

According to foreign media, Asif was in possession of a classified document marked "top secret” in Phnom Penh in October and is believed to have shared the document with an unauthorised person.

The leaked documents, including satellite imagery, surfaced last month on a Telegram channel, revealing Israeli military strategies ahead of a counterstrike on its archival.

Israel carried out a series of overnight air strikes on October 26 about three weeks after Iran launched ballistic missiles at Israeli targets. - Bernama
