Rising Malaysian songstress Vanessa Reynauld weaves magic with “Anyam Kayangan”

VANESSA Reynauld, the former Best New Artist at the 2022 AIM Awards, continues her rise with yet another stunning release.

Following the success of her recent single, the Klang-born Selangor girl Vanessa returns with a new masterpiece, “Anyam Kayangan”–-the theme song and original soundtrack (OST) for the highly anticipated horror fantasy series ‘Kayangan’, starring Zul Ariffin, Elisya Sandha, Hasnul Rahmat and Siti Saleha.

The haunting ballad was crafted by Bajai & Co, with evocative lyrics penned by Adrianna Cinta. Reflecting the eerie themes of ‘Kayangan’, the song seamlessly intertwines with the series' dark and mysterious narrative.

"Since ‘Kayangan’ is a horror drama, the emotions in this song had to match that tone. The lyrics, written by my good friend Adrianna Cinta, carry the weight of the drama's intense themes," Vanessa explained.

“Anyam Kayangan” explores life's harsh realities, contrasting them with the idealistic hopes we often hold. It delves into the pain, suffering, and consequences of past sins that continue to haunt us.

The chorus suggests that those with malicious intentions often bring nothing but false promises and suffering, creating an eternal trap. The second verse reveals hidden truths and the complexities of human nature, contributing to a far more intricate reality.

For Vanessa, “Anyam Kayangan” offered a fresh challenge, and that’s exactly why she was eager to take it on.

"The moment I heard the demo and knew it was the theme for a horror drama, I immediately agreed. It was a chance to try something different from my usual style. I believe my unique voice and style can bring a distinct flavour to this song," she said in a media release from Sony.

However, the project wasn't without its hurdles. Vanessa faced significant health challenges during the recording process. "When I first entered the studio, I was dealing with a bad cold, and the original key of the song was really high. I had to wait a week until I fully recovered to deliver the best performance," she revealed.

Stepping out of her comfort zone, Vanessa worked closely with her vocal producer, Afif, to fine-tune her performance.

"Afif helped me find the best approach to singing this ballad. Once I recovered, I could explore my vocal range more deeply, adjusting my style to fit the dark and suspenseful atmosphere of the drama. We aimed for a sound that was anxious yet powerful, capturing the essence of the storyline," she added.

The recording process went smoothly, despite these challenges, and Vanessa was equally satisfied with the production of the music video.

"Shooting the video was a marathon! We started at 9pm and wrapped at 4am. It was a long night, but the end result was worth every moment," she said, reflecting on the experience.

Vanessa hopes that “Anyam Kayangan” will enhance the drama’s impact.

"I haven’t seen the series yet, but I trust that the song fits perfectly with the story. I also hope that audiences will connect with it and maybe even add it to their favourite playlists. I believe my fans will notice the different vocal styles and emotions I’ve infused into this song," Vanessa concluded on a hopeful note.

Set for release on October 18, 2024, “Anyam Kayangan” will be available for download on iTunes and streaming on all major platforms, including Apple Music, Deezer, KKBox, Spotify, YouTube, and YouTube Music.
