JAKARTA (Bernama): Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has lauded United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres for his unwavering commitment to international peace and justice, calling his stance ‘inspiring’ and ‘consistent’.
"We deeply appreciate, respect, and support your consistent stance in upholding international peace, justice, and international law,” Prabowo said to Guterres, according to a statement from the Presidential Secretariat.
"This position is very inspiring to us, as you have remained steadfast in this regard,” he said during a bilateral meeting on Sunday, held on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
He also reiterated Indonesia’s strong commitment to supporting the UN’s initiatives on global issues, including food security, poverty alleviation, human rights violations, and the ongoing crisis in Palestine.
According to Prabowo, Indonesia stands ready to contribute further, including through the potential deployment of peacekeeping forces if required.
Guterres thanked Indonesia for its crucial role in global cooperation, highlighting its significant involvement in ASEAN-UN collaboration and addressing regional crises, including those in Myanmar and the Middle East.
He also reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to strengthening ties with Indonesia, particularly in efforts to reform the UN Security Council and international financial institutions to achieve global justice.
"We look forward to continuing our collaboration with Indonesia in preparation for future reforms,” he added.
Guterres, 75, is a Portuguese politician and diplomat who has been the UN Secretary-General since 2017, focusing on global peace, security, and diplomacy.
He has worked to address international conflicts, human rights issues, and security challenges, prioritising peace, conflict prevention, and the peaceful resolution of disputes through dialogue. - Bernama
