SONGKHLA, (Thailand): (Bernama) Three people, including a child, were injured in several explosions that occurred at the construction site of a Guan Yin statue near Pantai Sakom in Thepa district early Wednesday (Nov 20) morning.
Thepa Police chief Col. Pol. Thammarat Pechnongchoom said in the incident, two explosions occurred at 5 am local time in a tent area occupied by construction workers and a group of scouts.
"Initial investigations found that the explosion was caused by an M79 grenade launcher that was fired into the tent area, injuring three people, including a nine-year-old child, who was sleeping,” he told reporters after visiting the scene on Wednesday.
He added that four hours later, while police were at the scene of the incident, two homemade bombs suddenly exploded. No injuries or fatalities were reported in this explosion.
He said all 150 scouts camping in the area, along with 30 construction workers, were evacuated.
"All the injured are currently being treated at the Prince of Songkla University Hatyai Hospital and are in stable condition. Those at the tent site have also been moved to a safe location," he said.
Police found a letter written in Thai and Myanmar at the scene, believed to contain a warning to workers not to cooperate with the contractor involved in the construction of the statue.
Thammarat said police were investigating the motive of the incident. - Bernama
