Indonesia court rejects marriage validation application of singers Rizky Febian and Mahalini

PETALING JAYA: The South Jakarta Religious Court in Indonesia has rejected the marriage validation application of singers Rizky Febian and Mahalini, reported The Star's Malay-language portal mStar.

According to reports, the application was denied because their marriage did not fulfill the essential requirements of an Islamic marriage.

As a result, the couple has been advised to remarry to ensure their union is valid according to Islamic law and the principles of ijab and kabul.

Their application was automatically rejected because the marriage did not fulfill one of the essential conditions (rukun nikah).

"To ensure the marriage is valid according to both religious and legal perspectives, they are advised to remarry following all the prescribed rules and conditions of ijab and kabul," said a representative from the religious office.

The representative further clarified that issues related to the wali (guardian) were the reason the couple's marriage was deemed invalid according to Islamic teachings.

This issue arose because Mahalini, a Muslim convert (mualaf), appointed an ustaz as her wali, which contravenes the conditions of rukun nikah.

"After Mahalini converted to Islam, her biological father could not serve as her wali because he is not a Muslim.

"During the marriage proceedings, an ustaz acted as Mahalini's wali and officiated the marriage.

"However, the ustaz does not meet the criteria to serve as a wali—he is neither a wali nasab (a guardian by blood relation) nor a wali hakim (a court-appointed guardian), as required by Islamic law and marriage regulations," the representative explained.

Instead, Mahalini should have referred the matter of her wali to the religious office before the marriage to ensure that a wali hakim could be appointed for her.

On Oct 31, officials from the South Jakarta Syariah Court in Indonesia revealed that Rizky and Mahalini’s marriage had not yet been officially registered.

It is understood that the couple only submitted their marriage validation application on Oct 10.

For the record, Rizky and Mahalini tied the knot on May 5 at Hotel Raffles in Jakarta, Indonesia.
