Doctored explicit images used to blackmail Singapore public healthcare staff

SINGAPORE: Staff from public healthcare institutions have been receiving e-mails threatening to distribute doctored explicit images of them.

In these images, victims’ faces are superimposed onto photos of individuals in intimate and compromising situations.

The e-mails, sent from multiple e-mail addresses, asked for a ransom, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said on Thursday (Nov 28). The ministry was alerted to these e-mails on Nov 26.

The affected staff have been advised to make police reports, MOH said, adding that no staff member has lost money to the threats.

“MOH and our healthcare clusters adopt a zero-tolerance stance against any form of staff harassment and abuse and strongly condemn this malicious act against our healthcare workers and their families,” the ministry said.

On Nov 27, the police said they received more than 20 reports of such cases from the public in late November.

Those who have received such threats are advised to report them and hand over the e-mails to the police. - The Straits Times/ANN
