BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Four Japanese culinary students from Ohka High School visited Pengiran Isteri Hajjah Mariam Secondary School (SMPIHM) as part of the Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths (JENESYS) programme.

The Japanese students conducted a sushi-making demonstration, showcasing their techniques for preparing nigiri and maki rolls.

In return, SMPIHM students shared Bruneian culture by teaching their guests how to play the traditional musical instrument, the gulintangan.

Teachers at the school also demonstrated how to prepare ambuyat, a popular Bruneian dish. The event fostered mutual understanding and strengthened ties between Brunei and Japan through a cultural and culinary exchange.

Meanwhile, the Culinary School at Laksamana College of Business (LCB) hosted a lively cultural and culinary exchange between its students and their peers from Ohka High School.

The event was part of the JENESYS programme.

The event featured speeches from LCB Director of Academic Studies/Operations Bogusia Mischke, Deputy Chief of Mission/Counsellor from the Japanese Embassy in Brunei Darussalam Keiko Miura and a teacher from Ohka High School Nishioka.

They emphasised the role of food in strengthening international relationships.

The Japanese students presented insights into their hometown and Japanese culture, followed by a hands-on cooking session.

Japanese students taught LCB students to prepare sushi, while LCB students showcased Bruneian dishes like chicken curry, tumpi and nasi bungkus.

The event concluded with a lunch where participants enjoyed the dishes they prepared and shared cultural experiences. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
