Prabowo urges Cabinet to protect aviation sector amid fare reductions

JAKARTA: Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto (pic) has directed the Red and White Cabinet to maintain the health of the aviation industry following the decision to reduce airfares by 10 per cent ahead of the year-end holidays, reported Antara news agency.

He said that the policy is right, but the industry's condition also needs to be considered.

"We must stay alert so that the reduction in airfares does not harm the aviation industry," he stressed at the plenary Cabinet meeting at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta, on Monday.

He also asked Cabinet ministers to bolster collaboration to make optimal preparations for security and all activities related to the upcoming Christmas and New Year holidays.

In this regard, several ministers were asked to increase coordination, including Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi, Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana, and Public Works Minister Dody Hanggodo.

"For the end of the year, Christmas, and 2025 New Year holidays, please prepare maximally," he told the ministers.

The president highlighted that cross-ministerial and cross-agency collaboration is needed so that the holiday momentum can be used to improve the national economy and maintain the public's trust.

"We assure the public that they can face the New Year safely and smoothly. This is also a benefit for us, our momentum to improve our economy," he remarked.

The Indonesian government has decided to lower the price of domestic flight tickets by 10 per cent at all airports during the Christmas and New Year holidays.

The tariff adjustment will be valid for 16 days from Dec 19, 2024, to Jan 3, 2025. - Bernama-Antara
