UM confers professor emeritus on cardiologist Dr Wan Azman; KL boy Kasiban Muniandy receives Anugerah Pelajaran DiRaja award

Kasiban Muniandy is the Universiti Malaya recipient of Anugerah Pelajaran DiRaja 2024 award.

KUALA LUMPUR : Cardiology expert at the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya (UM) Datuk Dr Wan Azman Wan Ahmad was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus during the first session of the 64th Universiti Malaya Convocation Ceremony this year.

In a statement today, UM said that the award was presented by the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, who is also the UM Chancellor.

"Dr Wan Azman has made significant contributions in expertise and academic leadership at the faculty, university and national levels. He has served for more than 40 years at UM, where his contributions and achievements are undeniable, especially to the faculty and department in the field of cardiology,” according to the statement.

"His most significant contribution was when he introduced the Hospital Mesra Ibadah (HMI) concept (or prayer-friendly hospital) at the University Malaya Medical Centre, which continues to this day," said the statement.

"Dr. Wan Azman has also been involved in developing more than 20 clinical practice guidelines and has served on more than 100 committees and advisory bodies of various categories at both university and national levels."

In the same statement, Dr. Wan Azman said he hopes that the award will inspire all UM students and graduates to excel even more in the future.

"After serving for more than 40 years at UM, today is the most meaningful day for me because it was delivered by the Chancellor himself. It will be etched as the sweetest memory for me. The success I have achieved is due to the blessings of my parents and the support of my family," he said.

He also conveyed a message about the increasing prevalence of heart disease, especially among young people, and more concerningly, the very high mortality rate due to heart attacks.

However, he said heart disease can be prevented by taking preventive measures such as to quit smoking, maintain a healthy diet, and adopt a more active lifestyle.

This year, 9,253 graduates will receive their scrolls in UM’s convocation ceremony to be held over 16 sessions from Nov 30 to Dec 8.

Meanwhile, medical nursing student Kasiban Muniandy is the Universiti Malaya recipient of Anugerah Pelajaran DiRaja 2024 award.

The SM Amnuddin Baki student said he was extremely humbled by the award and thanked all his family members, friends, teachers, lecturers and college colleagues who have been very supportive throughout his life and in his studies.

"I have always been encouraged by my friends and family to do the the best I can. And it is very humbling when your best efforts are recognised. I thank everyone for this success," said Kasiban.

He also dedicated the award to his late father who died four years ago just before he got his entry into Universiti Malaya.

"It was his dream to see me as a graduate. And it is my dream to see his dreams achieved. I hope to further my studies and complete my PHD also in Universiti Malaya. That would definitely make my father very happy as well," said Kasiban.

Kasiban, who is currently working in Sunway University, also hopes his career in the medical line will go far.

"To be successful in this medical field and always look after my mom well, very well as possible, is my dream now," said the determined Kasiban.
