PHNOM PENH: Laos’ Prime Minister, Sonexay Siphandone, joins a delegation of high-ranking officials for an official visit to Cambodia starting Wednesday (Dec 4).
The mission aims to deepen the historical ties, solidarity, and comprehensive cooperation between the neighbouring Asean countries.
The visit follows an invitation from Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, showing a commitment to enhancing the stable strategic partnership between the two nations.
The Lao delegation led by the Prime Minister departed from Wattay International Airport in Vientiane and arrived at Phnom Penh International Airport for the two-day official visit.
Upon their arrival, they were welcomed by Cambodia’s Minister of Energy and Mines, Mr Keo Rottanak, alongside senior representatives from both nations.
Following a formal reception, the Lao delegation participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at two iconic Phnom Penh landmarks, the Independence Monument and the Somdech Norodom Sihanouk Monument.
This symbolic act aimed to honour the sacrifices of Cambodia’s ancestors and soldiers who fought for the nation’s independence.
During the visit, Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with his Cambodian counterpart to discuss ways to enhance trade, investment, and tourism cooperation.
The Lao delegation will also meet with prominent Cambodian leaders, including King Norodom Sihamoni, National Assembly President Khuon Sudary, and Senate President Hun Sen.
Additionally, the delegation is set to tour the Phnom Penh special economic zone and participate as guests at the Cambodia-Laos business forum, an event aimed at forging closer economic ties and encouraging cross-border investments.
Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1956, Laos and Cambodia have cultivated a strong partnership rooted in shared history and geographical proximity.
Over the years, both nations have intensified cooperation through mutual visits, high-level dialogues, and signed agreements focusing on economic, cultural, and political collaboration.
This latest visit displays a continued commitment from both governments to creating a favourable environment for businesses while allowing for the exchange of expertise and advancing mutually beneficial partnerships.
As ties between Laos and Cambodia strengthen, this visit is expected to be another milestone in solidifying their strategic alliance and fostering peace, stability, and prosperity in the region. - Vientiane Times/ANN
