Nepalese man gets jail, whipping for assaulting colleague

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: The Intermediate Court recently sentenced a 30-year-old Nepalese man to 24 months’ imprisonment and three whippings for causing grievous hurt to his colleague at their staff-house in Kampong Lambak Kiri.

Judge Harnita Zelda Skinner heard from Prosecutor Siti Mu’izzah Sabli that on May 13, Pawan Dhimal, employed as a cleaner at a company, went to his colleague’s room around 12.30pm to ask for a cigarette.

When his colleague refused, Dhimal became enraged, grabbed a frying pan from the kitchen and repeatedly hit his colleague’s head.

The victim suffered a depressed skull fracture and intracranial bleeding, requiring surgery and a 14-day stay in the Intensive Care Unit.

Dhimal during police investigation, admitted to hitting the victim, citing the refusal as the reason for his actions. He was arrested later that day, and the frying pan used in the assault was seized by the authorities.

In his ruling, the court noted that Dhimal had no prior criminal record and imposed the sentence to serve as a deterrent against similar violent behaviour. – Borneo Bulletin/ANN
