VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/ANN): The Laos Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, in collaboration with the European Union Delegation to Laos, has launched the Vientiane Heritage Route to preserve cultural heritage and boost tourism.
The project, unveiled at a ceremony at Patuxay Park, features 59 historical buildings showcasing Lao and foreign architectural styles, reflecting the city’s rich history and charm.
It includes an interactive map, website, and e-brochure to guide tourists and residents along the route.
Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism Suanesavanh Vignaket and Chargé d’Affaires of the European Union Delegation to Laos Mr Niall Leonard presided over the event. Diplomats and project partners were also in attendance.
Speaking at the event, Director General of the Heritage Department, Phakhanxay Sikhanxay, said the Vientiane Heritage Route aims to enhance tourism in Vientiane by providing access to unique and valuable historical buildings within a two-kilometre radius centred on Nam Phu Park in Xieng Yeun village.
“The initiative creates opportunities for tourists to explore historical buildings alongside other cultural and historical attractions in Vientiane,” he said.
Phakhanxay said he hoped the project would serve as a model for raising public awareness about the importance of conserving and protecting historical buildings as part of the nation’s heritage.
He emphasised that safeguarding these cultural assets will contribute to sustainable development and economic growth.
The resources, including a database, map, and promotional materials, have been handed over to the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism to support sustainable tourism and conservation efforts.
On the same occasion, the website www.vientianeheritage.com was also launched to facilitate access to information about the Vientiane Heritage Route for tourists.
