MANILA (Xinhua): Philippines were jolted on Saturday early morning when it suffered a double earthquake hit - one near Mindanao and another at SE of Union. No major damages, however, were reported.
An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 jolted 34 km SE of Union, Philippines at 18:42:58 GMT on Friday, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said.
The epicentre, with a depth of 56.1 km, was initially determined to be at 9.56 degrees north latitude and 126.36 degrees east longitude.
Earlier, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.7 jolted Mindanao, Philippines at 18:42:56 GMT on Friday, the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences said.
The epicentre, with a depth of 10.0 km, was initially determined to be at 9.39 degrees north latitude and 126.48 degrees east longitude.
There were warnings but no major damages were reported.
Earthquakes regularly strike the Philippines, which sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc of intense seismic and volcanic activity that stretches from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin.
Most are too weak to be felt by humans but strong and destructive quakes come at random with no technology available to predict when and where they will happen.
In December, a 7.6-magnitude quake struck off Mindanao, briefly triggering a tsunami warning.
That sent residents along the east coast of the island fleeing buildings, evacuating a hospital and seeking higher ground.
