Natural disasters leave 514 dead, missing in Vietnam in 2024

HANOI: Natural disasters in Vietnam in 2024 left 514 dead or missing and 2,207 others injured, said Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Hoang Hiep.

The number of fatalities was 3.04 times higher than in 2023 and 2.44 times more than the average number of the 2014-2023 period, local media reported on Monday (Dec 30).

Among the victims, 345 were killed or went missing in Typhoon Yagi, the strongest storm in the South China Sea in the past 30 years.

Natural disasters caused an estimated economic loss of over 88.7 trillion Vietnamese dong (3.4 billion U.S. dollars), which was 9.52 times higher than the statistics of 2023.

The deputy minister said Vietnam experienced extreme natural disasters in 2024. This year witnessed 39 severe flash floods and landslides in 32 provinces in the midland and mountainous regions of the northern, central and Central Highlands regions. - Xinhua
