SINGAPORE (The Straits Times/ANN): Four Singaporeans – three men and one woman – were arrested following the seizure of drugs worth more than S$1 million (RM3.31 million) in a Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) operation on Jan 4.
On the afternoon of Jan 4, CNB officers arrested two men, aged 27 and 25, at a carpark in the vicinity of Cassia Crescent in Geylang.
A third suspect, a 25-year-old man, fled the scene upon witnessing the arrest of the two men, but he, too, was nabbed after a short pursuit. A weapon was seized from him and handed over to the police, said CNB.
The 27-year-old man was found with about 1,855g of heroin, 1,032g of Ice, 98g of Ecstasy tablets and 300 Erimin-5 tablets on him.
The second suspect, the 25-year-old, was found to have about 136g of Ice and 21g of cannabis on him.
CNB officers later raided a nearby residential unit suspected to be the 27-year-old’s hideout, and 73g of Ice, 21g of heroin, 20 Erimin-5 tablets and a small amount of Ecstasy tablets were seized from the unit.
A 25-year-old woman, a suspected drug abuser, was arrested inside the unit.
In a statement on Jan 6, CNB said the drugs seized could potentially feed the addiction of about 4,590 abusers for a week.
It is an offence for a person – on his own behalf or on behalf of another person, whether or not that other person is in Singapore – to traffic or offer to traffic in a controlled drug, said CNB.
It is also an offence to carry out or offer to perform any act preparatory to or for the purpose of trafficking in a controlled drug.
Anyone found guilty of trafficking more than 15g of pure heroin, 250g of Ice or 500g of cannabis may face the mandatory death penalty.
“Drug traffickers have no concern for the thousands of lives that their deadly ware will destroy had the drugs gone onto the streets,” said Deputy Assistant Commissioner Aaron Tang, CNB’s director of intelligence.
He added that the bureau has doubled down on its preventive education efforts to keep people away from drugs and made it clear that the substances harm not just individuals but also their families and loved ones.
“For those who choose not to heed our warnings, CNB will relentlessly pursue them and bring them to justice,” he said.
