Thai marine suspected of shooting Cambodian politician in Bangkok

BANGKOK: Thai police have identified the suspect in the shooting incident where a former Cambodian opposition MP was killed in Bangkok on Tuesday (Jan 7).

It is learnt that police have obtained an arrest warrant for the suspect, identified as Ekalak, a former marine with the Royal Thai Navy.

Lim Kimya, 74, a Cambodian national with French citizenship, was shot in the right flank and shoulder.

Despite receiving first aid and CPR, Lim succumbed to his injuries at the scene near Wat Bowonniwet Vihara in Phra Nakhon District at 6pm.

Initial investigations revealed that Lim who was formerly an MP with the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party had travelled from Siem Reap, Cambodia, by bus with his French wife.

Upon arrival at the location, an assailant on a motorcycle approached him and shot him before fleeing the scene in a red Honda Wave 100 motorcycle with licence plate 845.

He was wearing a short-sleeve gray shirt, jeans, a helmet and a chest bag which may have been used to conceal a firearm.

Reporters stated that CCTV footage showed the suspect arriving on a motorcycle at 5.26pm. After removing his helmet, he waited on the bike for an extended period of time.

At 5.39pm, the suspect got off the motorcycle and crossed the road to the street aisle and shot Lim. - The Nation/ANN
