BANGKOK: (Bernama) Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has expressed her vision to transform Phuket, a southern province, into a premium tourist destination capable of hosting large-scale international events.
During a one-day working visit to Phuket, Paetongtarn praised the province’s post-Covid-19 recovery, noting that tourism is nearing pre-pandemic levels.
She also emphasised the importance of promoting premium tourism and increasing per-capita spending to bolster local businesses and the economy.
"The number of tourists has almost returned to pre-Covid-19 levels, with Phuket experiencing significant growth in tourist arrivals,” she said after officiating the Thailand International Boat Show: A Luxury Lifestyle Event 2025 in Phuket on Thursday (Jan 9).
The Prime Minister highlighted that the event caters to luxury tourists and showcases Thailand’s expertise in yacht maintenance and high-end services that meet international standards.
She noted that the industry appeals to tourists with diverse lifestyles seeking unique holiday experiences, aligning with the government’s commitment to fully supporting the sector.
"I understand the challenges faced by the private sector, having worked in it before. I want to assist in streamlining coordination with government agencies to simplify procedures for businesses in Phuket. This is crucial for boosting Thailand’s economy, increasing tourism, and driving further investment,” Paetongtarn said.
Earlier, the Prime Minister chaired a meeting to address key issues affecting Phuket province and discussed strategies to enhance its capacity as a growing tourism hub.
The meeting was attended by Tourism and Sports Minister Sarawong Thienthong, Permanent Secretary for Tourism and Sports Nutthareeya Thaveewong, Permanent Secretary for Transport Chayatham Phrommasorn, Permanent Secretary for Natural Resources and Environment Chatuporn Buruspat, Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat, and other provincial officials.
Phuket Governor Sophon revealed that 92.9 per cent of Phuket’s revenue is derived from tourism and services.
He reported during the meeting that in 2024, tourism generated over 481.4 billion baht, a 24 per cent increase from 2023, making Phuket the top-performing province in southern Thailand.
Visitor numbers reached 12.9 million in 2024, marking a 14.14 per cent rise compared to the previous year.
Sophon also highlighted Phuket’s connectivity, with direct flights from 21 countries and 53 cities, averaging 368 flights daily.
Additionally, the province boasts five world-class marina facilities and deep-water ports capable of accommodating large cruise ships. - Bernama
