HONG KONG: Hong Kong recorded its coldest day so far this winter as temperatures dropped to 11 degrees Celsius in the city on Sunday (Jan 12) morning, according to the Hong Kong Observatory.

The mercury dropped to 7 deg C or even lower in parts of the New Territories while the city was expected to have sunny and very dry weather for the rest of the day.

“The minimum temperature recorded at the Observatory was 11.0 degrees, the lowest so far this winter,” the observatory said.

“It will be fine and dry over the region. It will be cold in the morning, very cold over inland areas, where the temperature difference between day and night will be rather large,” it added.

The Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health reminded members of public, particularly the elderly and people with chronic illnesses, to take appropriate measures to protect their health amid the cold weather.

"Elderly people have less insulating fat beneath their skin to keep them warm, and their body temperature control mechanisms may be weaker. Their body may not be able to appropriately respond to the cold weather," the spokesman said.

With the Cold Weather Warning in force, the Labour Department also reminded employers to take appropriate precautions such as reminding employees who have to work outdoors or in remote areas to wear appropriately warm clothing.

The observatory said the territory will have cloudier weather with temperatures slightly rising in the next few days. - China Daily/ANN
