BEIJING: A woman in China who was carrying nine fetuses and underwent surgery to remove seven of them in November has lost the remaining two babies after suffering a serious infection.

Doctors suggested she go under the knife to abort seven of the fetuses at a total cost of 40,000 yuan (US$5,400).

The woman, surnamed Hou, was discharged from hospital at the end of November, with the remaining two embryos developing healthily, doctors said.

But on Jan 6, during a prenatal check-up, the expectant mother was found to have developed a cervical infection and her amniotic water broke.

“Doctors said the infection was too serious and there is a high risk,” her husband, whose name was not revealed, was quoted as saying.

“We had to take the option of saving the adult’s life and giving up the babies. If we did not act in a timely manner, the mother’s life would be put in danger,” he added.

Hou got became pregnant with so many fetuses after she heeded the advice of doctors who advised her to receive ovulation induction injections.

Doctors has earlier found that it was hard for her to conceive because of multiple cysts in her womb as well as endometrial polyp.

Hou became pregnant at the end of October and an ultrasonic examination showed there were nine embryos in her womb.

Doctors highly recommended that she reduce the number of embryos.
