YANGON: A man was killed and two others sustained injuries when an explosion occurred while planting a mine near a small bridge on the Yangon-Mawlamyine Highway, close to Myenigone village in Thaton Township.

According to local sources, the incident took place around 5:30 pm. on January 29. A group, believed to be an armed organisation, was in the process of setting up an explosive device when it detonated prematurely. The deceased suffered severe injuries, including the loss of his right arm and multiple wounds to his head and face, and died at the scene.

The two injured individuals reportedly fled the area following the blast. Witnesses confirmed their escape, though their current whereabouts remain unknown.

In a separate incident on the same day, around 8:00 pm, another explosion occurred at a motorcycle parking area in a festival compound in Kawk Than Village, also in Thaton Township. The blast, caused by a handmade mine, injured two civilians who were subsequently transported to Thaton District Public Hospital for medical treatment.

Since February 1, 2021, multiple bridges along the Yangon-Mawlamyine Highway, particularly in Thaton and Bilin townships, have been targeted with explosives. Notably, on June 29, 2023, around 4:30 am., members of the KNU Brigade 1, including KNLA and PDF forces, were responsible for the destruction of Kyone Eik Bridge on the highway, according to a statement from an official within the group. - Eleven Media/ANN
