Myanmar joins hands with Thailand, Laos and China to tackle cross-border forest fire and smog

YANGON: Myanmar is cooperating with Thailand, Laos and China to control cross-border forest fire and smog pollution at the national level, said U Khin Maung Yi, Union Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation.

He said this at the opening ceremony of the initial workshop of the forest fire resilience and local socio-economic and market linking empowerment project held at the Ingyin Hall of the Department of Forestry in Nay Pyi Taw on January 28.

The Minister said that among the reasons for the destruction of forests, forest fires cause great damage on the ecosystem and biological diversity. In addition, it can harm people's health.

"For the control of cross-border forest fire and smog pollution at the national level, we are cooperating with Thailand, Laos and China," the Minister said. "To ensure that there are no forest fires and to carry out controls, awareness activities for the participation of related departments and local residents in forest fire prevention activities and capacity building activities must be carried out. The main objective of the project is to build a forest fire management system to improve the capacity of the staff and to develop the socio-economic life of the locals."

The participants discussed reducing the occurrence of fire hotspots in Myanmar and controlling cross-border smog, Myanmar's forest fires and forest fire management conditions and the project activities and the processes to be carried out. - Eleven Media/ANN
