YANGON (Xinhua): The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under Myanmar's Ministry of Health has issued a public advisory on food safety measures following recent flooding caused by the breach of the Ngawun River embankment in Ayeyarwady region, state-owned daily The Global New Light of Myanmar reported.

The FDA said that floodwater might cause stored food to spoil or become contaminated. Food that has not come into contact with floodwater or is sealed in clean, waterproof and intact packaging, and undamaged canned goods that have been properly cleaned can be safely consumed.

The FDA also advised that cooked or prepared food that has remained at room temperature for more than four hours should be discarded.

The FDA offered health safety tips including boiling drinking water before use, checking that water bottle seals are intact, washing hands thoroughly with soap and water before eating, and using water purification tablets where available, the report said.  -- Xinhua
