Up close and personal with Lim Boon Siong

HE had a vision ten years ago to bring corrective-eye surgery to Malaysia as he himself had his eyesight improved with the surgery. Lim Boon Siong, chief executive of Vista Laser Eye Centre Sdn Bhd, saw the opportunity to transform the way bespectacled people in the country viewed their choices. He did not want them to feel resigned to using eyeware if they did not want to.

In 1998, at a time when eyesight correction cost RM10,000, Lim was one of the first few locals to have done blade laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (Lasik) eye surgery to correct his -10 dioptre of shortsightedness (for those familiar with spectacles, that is 1,000 degrees optical power).
